Publishing Company Files Lawsuit Over Rights To Aaliyah’s Music

A publishing company has filed a lawsuit claiming rights to Aaliyah‘s music. Reservoir Media Management is suing Craze Productions for alleged unlawful use of the late singer’s hits. Craze is accused of illegally selling Aaliyah’s music on iTunes. According to the suit, the company put tracks off the Detroit native’s self-titled debut, and her One In a Million release, up for sale. Reservoir –a New York City-based publishing company  housing hits for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Usher, and more– claims to have acquired rights to the singer’s catalog last year. The company maintains that it never gave Craze authorization to  sell the music. The lawsuit seeks to have a judge block Craze from further distribution of Aaliyah’s work, and pay a financial settlement. Ownership behind Aaliyah’s music may have hindered the release of her  posthumous album. Last year, it was announced that Drake and Noah “40″ Shebib were executive-producing the project, which was to feature 13-14 songs.

The Game Gets Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes Tattoo, Plans To Ink Aaliyah’s Face Next

Who knew The Game was such a big TLC fan? The Compton rapper got the image of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes tattooed on his ribs, recently. Game posted a photo of the “Dia De Los Muertos” version of Lopes, who passed away in 2002. He plans on adding even more his collection of ink, with a similar tatt of Aaliyah. “Got a Dia’ De Los Muertos version of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes tatted on the left side of my ribs by @petertattooist ,” he wrote. “Gettin a Dia’ De Los Muertos version of Aaliyah on the right side of my ribs next…… 2 rib tats in one day…. #B-tchImThuggin Pain…. Aint nobody got time for that ha ha ha.”

Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001, and is still very much the object of rappers’ affection. Drake has hailed the singer as an inspiration and also has a tattoo of her image. He and producer Noah “40″ Shabib are said to be working on the Detroit native’s posthumous album, but has yet to release the project. “It’s not about me, it’s not about 40, it’s really about her and her fans, and us getting the opportunity to give you something that we feel is great,” Drizzy said of the release. A new Aaliyah track, “Quit Hatin”  hit the ‘Net, after what would’ve been her 34th birthday, earlier in the month.  It’ll be interesting to see Game’s permanent ode to the fallen star.

Happy Birthday Aaliyah #R.I.P

Today marks what would’ve been the 34th birthday of the legendary Aaliyah Dana Haughton. Although she’s been gone for close to twelve years, her impact is still felt today. One of the most iconic voices and styles in entertainment, Aaliyah leaving this Earth entirely too early left an indelible mark on children who were young during her passing and have now grown to today’s top artists. From Drake, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, the influence that she has had on today’s top artists is unmistakable to those who were teenagers when she passed away in 2001. Artists such as Jay-Z, Three 6 Mafia, Master P and more also paid homage to her distinct sound by sampling her even while she was still alive. This week’s Wired 25, as we celebrate Aaliyah’s birthday, takes a look back at the 25 best Hip-Hop songs sampling the late great Aaliyah.

Just Blaze On Missing Chance To Work With Aaliyah

The world was close to a collaboration between the late Aaliyah and the acclaimed producer Just Blaze and only now are we finding out about it.

Speaking with Fuse TV, Just Blaze revealed that was scheduled to work with both he and rapperFreeway though their planned collaboration never came to fruition due to the singer dying in her tragic plane crash.

“When Aaliyah died in that plane crash, she was on her way to come meet me and Freeway to do a remix for ‘More Than a Woman.’ She had left her video shoot. I guess it was in the Bahamas, I think,” he explained to Fuse. “We got a call saying, ‘She just got on a plane. She’ll be at the studio in an hour or two.’ Then, 20 minutes later, people are on the radio saying that she died. We didn’t believe because we had literally just got off the phone with her people. We got confirmation a few minutes later that it was true…Rest in peace to Aaliyah. Super sad.”
