Roc Nation Sports Eyes Hockey Star

Roc Nation Sports Eyes Hockey Star

Hockey star Seth Jones could become the next athlete to join Jay-Z‘s fledgling Roc Nation Sports management company. According to Kirsten Fleming of The Post, Roc Nation is working to land a deal to handle Seth’s marketing and branding. Jones would have the benefit of both sides of the CAA (business) and Roc Nation partnership (marketing.} “When Seth comes to the NHL draft [in Newark, NJ] in June, his family, agents at CAA and Roc Nation are going to have a powwow to see if he’ll sign with them,” a source said. Jones is expected to be the first African American taken at the number one spot of this year’s NHL draft.

Jay-Z Relinquishes Brooklyn Nets Stake

Jay-Z In Concert

Being a member of the Nets organization surpassed some of my greatest ambitions. It was never about an investment; it was about the NETS and Brooklyn. My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun. I’m a Brooklyn Net forever. It’s been an honor to work with Mikhail Prokhorov, Dmitry Razumov, Christophe Charlier, ONEXIM Sports and Entertainment, Brett Yormark and all the wonderful people involved in making the Nets first class. My sincerest thanks goes to Bruce Ratner, who first introduced the idea of moving the Nets to Brooklyn. A thank you and deepest appreciation goes to the fans. You are the lifeblood of any team.

The Nets have made their mark on the NBA and as they enter a new era, Roc Nation does as well; as we embark on Roc Nation Sports. Our newest endeavor is committed to building the brands of professional athletes as we have done for some of today’s top music artists. For Roc Nation Sports to function at its full potential, NBA rules stipulate that I relinquish my ownership in the Brooklyn Nets. It was a tough decision but as I stated earlier, it’s not about ownership. Congratulations to The Nets on a great season and making the playoffs! I will always be a Brooklyn Net.

Jay-Z Applies To Become Baseball Agent

Jay-Z Applies To Become Baseball Agent

According to USA Today reports, Jay-Z has started the process of becoming a baseball agent. Roc Nation Sportshas already partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) Sports in order to represent New York Yankees playerRobinson Cano. It seems Jay-Z is also selling his share of the Brooklyn Nets because of issues that may arise if he were to become certified with the Major League Baseball Players AssociationYahoo! Sports reported this earlier in the month. Jay-Z also discussed this in his ”Open Letter,” a song he recently leaked. His verse denied that this was going on. ”Would’ve brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free,” he rhymes on the track. “Except I made millions off of you fucking dweebs. I still own the building. I’m still keeping my seats. Y’all buy that bullshit, y’all better keep y’all receipts.”  Jay-Z reportedly owns less than one percent of the Nets. However, he has been an important public figure for the team.

Jay-Z Giving Up Ownership Stake In Brooklyn Nets To Become NBA Agent

Could the Jay-Z era of the Brooklyn Nets be over after it just really got started? The rapper/mogul is reportedly looking to divest his ownership stake in the NBA franchise in order to be able to represent players as an agent.

Yahoo! Sports reports:

Entertainment mogul and rapper Jay-Z has started the process of divesting his small share of ownership with the Brooklyn Nets to extend his Roc Nation Sports representation business into basketball, sources told Yahoo! Sports. Jay-Z – whose real name is Shawn Carter – owns less than 1 percent of the Nets, but has been a central public figure in the franchise’s marketing and move from New Jersey to Brooklyn. Selling his share of the Nets is a necessary prelude for Jay-Z to obtain his National Basketball Players Association certification as an agent. NBA rules mandate that no one individual affiliated with a player representation company can have an ownership stake with an NBA team.

It was already speculated that Hova would make this move after he announced the formation of Roc Nation Sports one week ago. The sports representation agency’s first signing was Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano. However, considering Jay-Z’s ties to the Nets and personal connections with players like LeBron James, it was a given that he had his sights on eventually representing NBA players, too. If all goes to plans, Jigga plans to be free of his stake in the Nets by the 2013 NBA Draft, freeing him up to pitch his services to the next crop of pro ball players. But don’t expect the “Big Pimpin’” rapper to be discussing the finer points of NBA contracts just yet. Says Yahoo! Sports:

Much like the arrangement with CAA’s baseball side, Jay-Z will let the firm’s basketball agents handle contract negotiations and day-to-day business with athletes. The potential impact will come with athletes linking to Jay-Z’s global reach in marketing, entertainment and business.

Earlier this week, the Brooklyn native announced that Roc Nation was partnering with the Universal Music Group, thus becoming a standalone record label.

Jay-Z Opens Roc Nation Sports, Signs New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano

jiggacano

If Jay-Z is anything, he is ambitious. The rapper/mogul is opening a sports representation agency called Roc Nation Sports and his first client is New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano. ESPN journalist Darren Rovell broke the news via Twitter. “BREAKING: Jay Z To Open Sports Representation Agency, Roc Nation Sports. 1st client is Robinson Cano,” he tweeted. “Yes, Jay Z, in order to rep NBA players, must get rid of his Nets share, but he’s open to doing that.” Cano left his agent, Scott Boras, to sign on the dotted line with Hova, reports ESPN. Roc Nation will be representing athletes in a partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) that will be called Roc Nation Sports.

“At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field,” said Cano in a statement. “I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates.” That the Brooklyn rapper is making moves in professional sports shouldn’t be a surprise. Besides being a minority, and influential, owner of the Brooklyn Nets, in November 2012, star New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz signed a management deal with Roc Nation.

Word is that  Jay-Z is planning to become a certified agent himself in baseball, followed by basketball and football. But in order to rep basketball players it would mean giving up is stake in the Nets. “Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” said Jay-Z in a statement.

Jay-Z Is Working On A New Album [PHOTOS]

hova2

Lately, photos have been popping up of Jay-Z in the studio with various A-list rap names and producers. The question most people immediately ask: “Is Jay-Z working on album.” The short answer: “Duh.” Most recently, Hova was snapped in the studio with Rick Ross, Timbaland and DJ Khaled. Previously, he’s also been spotted in the lab with Swizz Beatz and Mike Will Made It. The common denominator in the pics so far is Timbaland, who recently signed up with Roc Nation. But no one has said a word about what, if any, songs were actually being recorded. However, the truth is Jay-Z has been working on a new album since before the release of his collaborative Watch The Throne project with Kanye West in 2011. He said so, when the writer of this story got an early preview of said album along with select outlets. At the time, Jay-Z relayed that he reached out to Frank Ocean to record a tune for a solo album, and was so pleased that he wanted the Odd Future crooner to contribute to WTT (“No Church In The Wild,” “Made In America”). For now, the best confirmation that an actual release is near, besides Jay-Z granting a media outlet an interview and saying, “Yes, my new album will drop on…,” will be when the “On To The New One” rapper is seen about town rocking a nappy afro. Last time that happened, when he was again rocking a crispy Caesar it signaled the completion of the WTT album. Hova probably dropping a new album in 2013 brings us to another stark reality. Jay Electronica, who Jigga signed to Roc Nation back 2010, has yet to release his debut album, Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn).
