WNBA No. 1 Pick Brittney Griner Comes Out

Former Baylor hoops star Brittney Griner is the WNBA‘s No. 1 draft pick, and she also happens to be gay. The 6′ 8″ forward came out during an interview with fellow draft picks Skylar Diggins and Elena Delle Donne. Griner, who will be playing for the Phoenix Mercury, mentioned her orientation when the topic of whether female pro athletes are more accepting of homos-xuals then their male counterparts came up during a video interview with Sports Illustrated. “I really couldn’t give an answer on why it’s just so different. Being one that’s out, it’s just being who you are,” said Griner. “Again, like I say, just be who you are. Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don’t hide who you really are.” Griner added, ”It really wasn’t too difficult. I wouldn’t say I was hiding or anything like that. I’ve always been open about who I am and my s-xuality. It wasn’t hard at all If I can show that I’m out and i’m fine and everything’s okay, hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way.” Salute to Brittney Griner, she gets buckets.

Michael Jordan will be 50 years old on February 17 and the tributes are starting to roll in. Sports Illustrated has placed the NBA Hall of Famer on their latest cover. The cover photo is a pic of the famous free throw line dunk that won His Airness the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk contest with a big graphic of the number “50″ surrounding him. It’s the February 18 issue and coincidentally it is his 50th time Jordan is gracing the front of the sports magazine (“Convenient how the works,” reads the cover line). The cover story is written by Phil Taylor and chronicles MJ’s influence and there is also an oral history of the aforementioned dunk and a look at all the SI covers #23 has appeared on.ESPN’s Sportcenter recently hooked up a short documentary titled “Gotta Be The Shoes” that examines Jordan’s worldwide popularity, which continues to this day, and its connection to his Air Jordan signature sneakers.Peep some of our favorite Michael Jordan Sports Illustrated covers—no coincidence he’s usually rocking a crispy pair of classic Air Jordans (and even a pair of Converse)—in the gallery.
